For the benefit of patients, Jennie Stuart Health implemented a robotic surgical system in 2013. At a cost of nearly $2 million, the da Vinci® Surgical System represents the largest investment in a single piece of equipment by the hospital. The da Vinci system is the leading robotic surgical system in use in the U.S. today.
“There are few hospitals our size in America with a surgical robot. We are proud of this expansion of clinical capabilities for our patients across the Pennyrile region,” Eric Lee, president & CEO, Jennie Stuart Health said at a news conference.
The first physician trained in the use of the system was Matthew Robinson, MD, FACS, a board-certified general surgeon. He has been a member of the Jennie Stuart Health Medical Staff since 2007.
“The da Vinci system will allow surgeons like me to perform minimally invasive surgery with more precision due to three dimensional viewing and laparoscopic instruments that allow more freedom of movement than current conventional instruments,” Dr. Robinson said. “I am excited about the opportunity to provide this service to my patients.”
Dr. Matthew Robinson performed the first robotic procedure at Jennie Stuart and recently received additional training, now capable of performing a procedure to remove the gallbladder with a single incision in the navel. This single-site surgery is only available at a small number of hospitals of our size in the U.S.
